This mission places the S-44, SS-155, west of Bougainville in the Eastern
end of the Coral Sea on May 9, 1942. On the 8th the American and
Japanese carrier forces attacked each other in the first naval battle where
the ships did not directly sight the enemy. This
morning finds the Shokaku damaged but bound for Truk with the Zuikaku and
their escorts. On the surface before dawn the S-44
is going to get in the way.
